Greek fans go mental after the signing of Riera.

Given that World Cup winner Rivaldo was playing for Olympiacos not that long ago, it was a strange sight to see such celebration over the signing of a player as low-profile as Albert Riera. Imagine what they’d be like if they ever managed to sign Messi.
The Spanish winger joined Liverpool from Espanyol for £8 million in August 2008. A fantastic opening four months and valuable contributions in all competitions saw him help his team to an agonising second-place finish. In the post-season he was rewarded for his club form by being selected for Spain’s Confederations Cup squad.
His second - and final - season at Liverpool went less favourably. Struggling with injuries early on, he was then frozen out by Rafa Benitez for his comments that the club was ‘a sinking ship’.
Now begins a new challenge for the 28-year old in Greece. His personal goal may be to win back a place in Spain’s World Cup-winning squad. But why did so many fans turn out to welcome a player who has evidently had difficulty keeping his opinions about his employers to himself? Well, I suppose the Greek people need something to celebrate at the moment…
